We stopped in Newcastle for a couple of days after new year and tried this restaurant. So glad we did. Was the best meal we've had in years. Food was fresh, has so much flavour and wet loved it! Had the vego curries which were amazing. We will be back as soon as we get back to Newcastle.
The experience was great! You eat with you hands and they bring this cool basin to wash your hands in. I had the braised chicken and lamb and both were fantastic. I would recommend the the sambuzza as the starters as well. Both the panna cotta and date pudding were excellent. Overall food was fantastic, service was qui k and staff were friendly. We were also able to get a table without a booking.
Food was good. They provide hand washing before the meal and if you want to wash your hands after, the shopping mall connected to the restaurant has a restroom.
We had the zucchini flowers, fried chicken, braised lamb, and braised fish. The mains came with their injera which is a fermented flatbread that tastes like sourdough with the texture of a soft thick crepe.
No utensils are provided for the main meal although I think you can request it as the table next to us requested a knife. You get a spoon for your dessert. Sadly they were out of sticky date pudding but we enjoyed the ginger panna cotta with raspberry sauce.
It was quite different from the Ethiopian cuisine I had before. The mains were quite ordinary and the portion was small.
Expensive for a small serve of braised lamb that was practically all bones with any flavour of the meat totally overpowered by the sauce/spices (we could have been eating anything!). It looked like the dog's bones had been raided. Mixed salad was mainly leaves. The only good, but also expensive serve was dessert.
We won't eat there again.
The food and environment was absolutely wonderful, such authentic dishes rich with culture. Unfortunately the waitresses were extremely aloof - our table tried to get there attention on numerous occasions, but they were busy chatting behind the register. Our entrees came after a 25 min wait and then mains took around an hour, despite the fact it was a Wednesday night and the place was fairly quiet.
Reluctant to put three stars as the food was so beautiful. Hoping this was just an off night and the wait staff improve their service asap.
First time I ever had Ethiopian food. As a South African of Indian descent, I saw connections with sub continent food (Sambussa very similar to Samoosa and also to the Lebanese food Sambousek). Had a great experience
The meat was tender to the point where I could eat it through a straw!
And the desert itself was a perfect close to the meal! The sticky date pudding was moist and soft with just the right amount of salted caramel sauce.
